Num Guide

Learn how to use Num to format and animate numbers in After Effects.

How to install Num

Download the Num preset and drag the Num.ffx file to:

Documents → Adobe → After Effects 2023* → User Presets

* or your current version

Inside After Effects, navigate to the Effects & Presets window. You should be able to find the preset by searching "num". If not, open the dropdown menu and select "Refresh List."

How to use Num

Step 1 - Create a text layer

Within a composition, create a text layer. You can give it placeholder text* (i.e. “123”) and adjust the styling however you like.

*The placeholder text can be used to control the custom symbols (see Step 3).

Step 2 - Apply preset

With the text layer selected, double click the Num preset to apply it.

Step 3 - Configure Num

With the text still selected, navigate to the Effect Controls. Under the Num effect, you can customize the number formatting.

  • Number - Controls the actual number. Keyframe this value to animate between numbers while retaining all formatting.
  • Thousand Separator - Adds commas/periods/underscores/spaces between thousand, million, billion, etc (i.e. "1,000")
  • Decimal Separator - Changes the decimal symbol between period, comma, underscore, space
  • Decimal Places - Sets how many decimal places will be visible (i.e. "1.00")
  • Symbol - Sets a symbol before or after the number. Custom will use whatever the actual text from your text layer. (i.e. "$100")
  • Financial - Wraps negative numbers in parenthesis and removes dash (i.e. "(100)")
  • Fixed Digits - Sets the minimum number of digits that the number will take up, adding 0s beforehand when necessary (i.e. "001")

Pro features

Make sure your expressions engine is set to JavaScript (File > Project Settings > Expressions).

With Num Pro you unlock additional controls under the Num Pro Effect.

Big Numbers

  • Abbreviations - When toggled on, a big number abbreviator (K, M, B, T) will be added when the number reaches 10,000 or higher.
  • Abbreviation Decimal Places - Sets the amount of visible decimals places shown when abbreviators are used.
  • Power of 10 - Multiplies the number by 10 ^ value this is set to. You can animate this value in order scale numbers exponentially.

Monospace

When using monospacing, set the paragraph alignment of your text layer to center – you will be able to change the visible alignment under the Text Alignment control.

  • On / Off - Turns monospacing on. This forces each character to take up the same horizontal space.
  • Spacing - This sets the amount of space between each character.
  • Text Alignment - Sets the text alignment of the number.
