Texture Hop Guide

Learn how to use Texture Hop to create animated textures in After Effects or Premiere Pro.

Texture Hop Preset

How to install

Download the Texture Hop preset and drag the Texture Hop.ffx file to:

Documents ➡️  Adobe ➡️  After Effects 2023*  ➡️  User Presets

* or your current version

Inside After Effects, navigate to the Effects & Presets window. You should be able to find the preset by searching "texture hop". If not, open the dropdown menu and select “Refresh List.”

How to use

Step 1 - Add image to comp

Add a texture (or any image) to a comp. Texture Hop works best when the image is significantly bigger than the comp size.

If necessary, you can rotate the image any factor of 90 degrees. This will automatically change how Texture Hop handles the size of your image.

Step 2 - Apply Texture Hop

With the texture layer selected, apply the Texture Hop preset.

Step 3 - Customize Texture Hop settings

With the texture layer still selected, navigate to the Texture Hop effect from the Effects panel.

Here you can change the following settings:

Frame Rate - This will set how many frames per second the Texture Hop animation will be. The higher the frame rate, the faster the animation. This setting will be limited by the comp's frame rate setting.

Randomize Position - When toggled on, the layer will randomly change position.

Randomize Rotation - When toggled on, the layer will randomly change rotation.

Randomize Reflection - When toggled on, the layer will randomly cycle between 100% and -100% scale for both X & Y values.

Randomize Scale - When toggled on, the layer will randomly change scale at a value between the Scale Minimum and the Scale Maximum.

Step 4 - Apply Tint (optional)

To change the color of a texture, apply the Tint effect.

With the Tint effect applied, you can change the "Map White To" color to any color you want.

Texture Hop MOGRT

How to install

Download the Texture Hop MOGRT and drag the Texture Hop.mogrt file to the Essential Graphics panel in Premiere Pro.

How to use

Step 1 - Add MOGRT to sequence

Inside a sequence double click or drag the Texture Hop template to add it to your sequence.

Step 2 - Customize Texture Hop settings

With the clip selected, navigate to the Edit tab of the Essential Graphics panel.

Here you can change the following settings:

Texture - Drag any image over the texture panel to replace the texture.

Scale - Adjusts the default scale of the image. If Randomize Scale is toggled on, this will be multiplied by current the random value.

Rotation - Adjust the default rotation of the image. If Randomize Rotation is toggled off, this can be used to adjust the orientation of the image by adjusting the value in 90 degree increments.

Step 3 - Apply Tint (optional)

To change the color of a texture, apply the Tint effect.

With the Tint effect applied, navigate to the Effect Controls panel. Here you can change the "Map White To" color to any color you want.
